This self-circulation cooling system works by sending cooled inert gas through furnace heating chamber. As inert gas flows through products and heating chamber, inert gas picks up heat from products and refractory. The heated argon or nitrogen gas passes through an outlet of the furnace to the electrically cooled heat exchanger.
2017913If inert gas is leaking in from the inert-gas system or from valving on the furnace, it can cause the furnace to exhibit signs of poor pumping, poor leak rates, poor ultimate vacuum, poor ability to pump against normal outgassing loads, backstreaming, etc. There are also two common methods for locating inert-gas leaks.

So an atmosphere of natural gas doesn't seem very inert to me. It can however be safely heated way past ignition temperature as long as it is burned off and no oxygen gets into the furnace. Back in the 50's some oxygen got into one of the furnaces and it exploded, killing several nearby workers.
