Re: Building a small propane heat treating oven I also agree that you will want higher rated furnace cement. 3000 degree cement or higher if you can find it. If you're making very advanced knives then an oven with controls will be more sophisticated but if you are just mucking around then the propane burner will be fine.
As the number one innovator in Knife Making and Heat Treating Kilns, Paragon has developed new ceramic fiber 2 and 3 zone models of their world famous KM series ovens. Dubbed the KM Pro Series, these kilns offer unprecedented control over the heat treating process, allowing you to create ever stronger and more resilient blades.
2017114I ran a full heat treat-temper on two 440-C blades. 1880 with 15 min. soak and temper at 380 for two hours. I brought it back to him and he said it took approx. a whopping 26 cents worth of elect. I found that hard to believe.but that's what he told me.

Place the steel into a heat treat oven or forge and raise the temperature to between 1,550 degrees Fahrenheit and 1,650 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the steel to remain in the oven for a "soak" time of at least 30 minutes. Allow more soak time for more massive pieces of steel.

2012128Unless you are using a regulated heat treating oven or molten salt pots learning to spot the decalescence and recalescence in the steel as it changes phases is a big help. However, it took me over a year to finally spot it-and did I ever feel accomplished when I finally did.
The heat treating method is the same for knives made from forging, or stock removal. Whatever method you used, the final bevel should be on the blade and the surface should be brought to the desired finish. This was one of my first forged blades and I found the hammer markings appealing, so I did not
